About Broughton Archival Consultancy

BAC specialises in solving heritage problems that overlap traditional divisions between museum curators, archivists and heritage building consultants. BAC is an economical small business solution that can sort out your heritage problems, project manage a creative response and if necessary refer solutions to architects, engineers and conservators for specialist services.

Background, BAC and Roving Curator

Broughton Archival Consultancy commenced business over 11 years ago in 1998, providing book valuations under the then Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme. BAC provided training in rare books, paper based preservation and archives management for book collectors and librarians, BAC then added conference events and preserving personal documents to the available services.

The principal of BAC, Bob Broughton then completed qualifications in built cultural heritage management. He then threw himself into the task of learning restoration techniques, enduring a lack of available trade training and tools and eventually learning the most basic skills of traditional house building in stone, plaster, wood and metal and an understanding of traditional techniques as well as academic conservation theory and practice. As a result, Bob commenced providing wider advice on cultural collections in and restoration of heritage buildings and homes.

Experience in museum management revealed a need for further academic qualifications to augment the practical experience, and a Graduate Diploma in Museum studies was followed by a Masters degree in Cultural Heritage Management.

Registering the business name Roving Curator, in 2005, BAC added museum curatorial and heritage building management to the other services provided and prepared a register of available consultants to assist clients.
